Contraception
Hormonal contraception is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy, giving you more control over your reproductive health. Options include the combined pill (COC) and progestogen-only pill (POP), each suited to different lifestyles and health needs. Hormonal contraception can also help regulate periods, reduce cramps, and manage other menstrual symptoms.
Through 123Meds, you can receive expert-approved hormonal contraception via our UK-registered online pharmacy service, with prescriptions reviewed by clinicians and delivered discreetly straight to your door.
Contraception refers to methods used to prevent pregnancy. Options include hormonal methods (like the pill, patch, or injection), barrier methods (such as condoms), intrauterine devices (IUDs), and permanent solutions like sterilisation. The right choice depends on individual health, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Some methods also offer added benefits, such as regulating periods or reducing acne.
Other types of contraception can be used such as the hormonal coil, contraceptive patch, or implant. See the Contraception Choices website for information on different contraception methods.
Combined Contraceptive Pill
The combined oral contraceptive pill is one of the most commonly used forms of birth control and includes well-known brands such as Microgynon, Yasmin, and Cilest. Taken daily, it is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly.
This pill contains synthetic versions of oestrogen and progestogen, which work mainly by stopping ovulation (the release of an egg). It also thins the lining of the womb, making it less likely for a fertilised egg to implant.
Some brands include inactive (placebo) pills, allowing you to maintain the routine of taking one pill each day without a break between packs—something many users find helpful in remembering their dose.
Progestogen-only Pill (POP)
Also known as the ‘mini-pill’, the progestogen-only pill contains just one hormone—progestogen—and no oestrogen. It works by thickening the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching an egg. Some types, such as those containing desogestrel, also stop ovulation.
Brands include Cerazette, Cerelle, and Noriday. Unlike the combined pill, the POP is taken every day without any breaks between packs.
What types of contraception can I get from 123Meds?
We currently offer oral contraceptives, including the combined pill and the progestogen-only pill (mini pill). These are available after completing an online consultation reviewed by one of our UK-registered clinicians.
How does the online consultation work?
Simply complete a short medical questionnaire. Our clinicians will review your answers to ensure the treatment is safe and suitable for you. If approved, a prescription will be issued and sent to our partner pharmacy for dispensing and delivery.
How effective are the contraceptive pills you offer?
Both the combined pill and the progestogen-only pill are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken correctly.
Do I need to take the pill at the same time every day?
Yes. For the mini pill, it’s especially important to take it at the same time each day. Some types (like those containing desogestrel) offer a slightly wider time window. The combined pill is a bit more flexible but should still be taken daily around the same time for maximum effectiveness.
Can I switch from one type of pill to another through 123Meds?
Yes, but you’ll need to complete a new consultation so our clinicians can ensure the alternative is safe and appropriate for you.
Will the pill protect me from sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?
No. The pill does not protect against STIs. To reduce your risk, use condoms in addition to hormonal contraception.
How will my medication be delivered?
Once prescribed, your medication will be discreetly packaged and delivered to your chosen address by a UK-registered pharmacy.
What if I experience side effects?
If you experience side effects, stop taking the medication and speak to your GP or one of our clinicians. Common side effects include mood changes, breast tenderness, and spotting between periods.
Can I use 123Meds if I’ve never taken contraception before?
Yes, but we’ll need to ask a few more questions about your health history to ensure it's safe to prescribe. If you’re unsure which pill is right for you, you may wish to speak with your GP for personalised advice.
Is it safe to take the contraceptive pill if I smoke?
If you’re over 35 and smoke, combined pills are generally not recommended due to an increased risk of blood clots. In these cases, a progestogen-only pill may be a safer option.
